day 5 – good news

i love this prayer from Moses to God in Psalm 90

he says,

“God, satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all of our days.”

(the whole of psalm 90 is just beautiful, so if you’re wondering what you can read in the Bible, dive into this psalm and ask God for revelation!)

there are so many things that stand out to me in this verse.

first is the word “satisfy

fullness, wholeness, without need or want, and more – happiness.

we are people who long for and live searching for satisfaction.

then there is His “steadfast love

a love that never goes away.  a love coming one way – from God to us; nothing we have done or are doing or will do changes this love’s direction.  it is without terms or conditions- we never have to check the “i agree with the terms and conditions” box for it to be true and for us and to us right now.   and that steadfast love of the artist of the universe is for us to be satisfied in.  whole in His love.

every morning

think about waking up satisfied each. and. every. day.

me? i wake up thinking about all the things i have to do that day, thinking about what cereal i will eat, thinking about where i’m going to get my coffee, thinking about how i love my bed so so much, wondering if i should wash my hair or just stick it up in a bun, agreeing with the enemy about all the ways i’ve disappointed God even since the first blink of my eyes because of what i didn’t do.  it’s like the moment i come to consciousness out of sleep, my mind hits the ground running at 100mph, and i can’t keep up.

but to wake up satisfied?  i will just say i do not have this now, but i really want it.  it sounds like peace and refuge, or like a good, hot meal when you’re really hungry.  it just sounds like good news, because it’s possible, and it’s for us, and we don’t have to earn it out of our good conduct and ability to open up the good book as soon as we wake up in the morning.

“that we may rejoice and be glad all of our days.”

joy and gladness every day.  a consistent, unwavering, unconditional joy and gladness.  honestly, my days are like a roller coaster, so dependent on my circumstances.  but when we are satisfied in the steadfast love of our God, something that never changes or wavers with the days or circumstances, joy and gladness are the outcome.  we do not work hard to get this, read enough books of the Bible or pray enough hours of the day.  the truth is that God’s love is steadfast for us no matter what, and that love, His love, satisfies us. it makes us whole, full, and happy, no matter what is going on in or around us.

yes, satisfy me every morning with your steadfast love, that i may rejoice and be glad all the days of my life.
